Credit Crunch Christmas

PRESS RELEASE
Credit Crunch Christmas: Shrinking family finances storing up trouble for relationships this Christmas, Relate warns

Relate Basingstoke the relationship support organisation, is concerned that the economic downturn is piling pressure on personal relationships.

There is growing concern among Relate counsellors as Christmas approaches that many people seriously affected by a loss in earnings and hikes in mortgage, rent or other outgoings, will not seek the help they need. In the run up to Christmas, stretching the month’s salary to foot the bill for gifts, food and drink can add considerably to the strain.

Relate can help couples to face their situation together – it may be only a few sessions with a counsellor, but it’s not such a big step and could help the whole family to face the financial pressures and get through the tough times.

Relate has been supporting the nation’s relationships for 70 years. Individuals, couples, children and young people and whole families seek support in their thousands from trained professionals, who care about giving their clients a new perspective on their relationships. In times of financial trouble, actually talking about the problem is the biggest hurdle – Relate counsellors can help couples to get talking again to address their problems.

Post-Christmas is traditionally the busiest time for Relate Centres who gear up for a high volume of clients seeking advice and support in January after the festive season. Relate has some limited funding to offer subsidised appointments to those on low income or benefits. Relate Basingstoke will have assessment appointments available on 29 and 30 December.
